Guccione was known for pushing the limits in his magazine, and was no different when creating Caligula. What made Caligula so repugnant? To start off, it was produced by Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione. Rex Reed panned it, as did almost every other critic of the time. ![]() ![]() Roger Ebert called it the most repulsive film he had ever seen. Caligula is one of those cult films that has had a bad reputation from the start.
